Hadith 1124

1124 - أنا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ، مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ، أنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَكَرِيَّا النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ، أنا الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ اللَّيْثِ بْنِ مَسْرُورٍ الرَّاسِبِيُّ، نا مُعَافَى بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ فُلَيْحِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أَبِي يُونُسَ مَوْلَى عَائِشَةَ أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتِ: اسْتَأْذَنَ رَجُلٌ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " إِنَّهُ بِئْسَ ابْنُ الْعَشِيرَةِ: قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ هَشَّ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَانْبَسَطَ لَهُ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ الرَّجُلُ وَاسْتَأْذَنَ رَجُلٌ آخَرَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ اسْتَأْذَنَ نِعْمَ ابْنُ الْعَشِيرَةِ، قَالَتْ: فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ لَمْ يَنْبَسِطْ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَمَا انْبَسَطَ لِلْآخَرِ، وَلَمْ يُهَشَّ لَهُ قَالَتْ: فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قُلْتَ لِفُلَانٍ مَا قُلْتَ ثُمَّ هَشَشْتَ وَانْبَسَطْتَ إِلَيْهِ، وَقُلْتَ لِفُلَانٍ مَا قُلْتَ ثُمَّ لَمْ أَرَكَ صَنَعْتَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ يَا عَائِشَةُ إِنَّ مِنْ أَشَرِّ النَّاسِ مَنِ اتُّقِيَ لِفُحْشِهِ "
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that a man sought permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, he is a bad man of his tribe." Then when he entered, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke to him openly and cheerfully. When he left, another man sought permission. When he sought permission, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is a good man of his tribe." Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When that man entered, you did not speak to him openly as you had spoken to the first one, nor did you show him such cheerfulness. She says: When he left, I said: O Messenger of Allah! You said what you said about so-and-so, then you spoke to him openly and cheerfully, and you said what you said about the other, but I did not see you treat him in that way? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Aisha! Indeed, the worst person among people is the one whom people avoid because of his foul language."

Our Sheikh, Hafiz Zubair Ali Zai rahimahullah, writes:

① It is correct and permissible for the people of knowledge to criticize (jarh) narrators who are discredited (majruh).

② Since that unknown person was ill-mannered and of an insolent type, therefore, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam showed leniency towards him for the reason that perhaps this person might not commit ill-manners and insolence, nor show disrespect in the court of the Prophet. And it is evident that disrespecting the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is disbelief (kufr). Therefore, by showing leniency, you saved this person from disbelief and sin. Indeed, you are the mercy to the worlds (rahmatan lil-'alamin). Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

③ If there is a legitimate (shar'i) excuse, then it is permissible to speak ill of someone behind their back.

④ It is permissible to inform people, in the absence of wicked individuals, about their evil so that people may remain safe from their harm. (Shama'il Tirmidhi: pp. 355, 356)
