Hadith 110

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "Oppression will be darknesses on the Day of Resurrection."

Brief Explanation
Explanation:
The meaning is that on the Day of Resurrection, the oppressor will be deprived of light; darkness will surround him from all sides, and he will not be able to reach his destination. On the other hand, the believer will be protected from these darknesses; he will be given such a light that will run ahead of him and to his right, so that he will reach his destination by its illumination. Allah, the Exalted, has mentioned the light of the believers, saying:

"Their light will run before them and on their right."

Another meaning of this hadith could be that by "darknesses" are meant the hardships, difficulties, and punishments of the Hereafter, which the oppressor will face on the Day of Resurrection. In some places in the Noble Qur'an, the meaning of "darknesses" (zulumat) is taken as hardships, as in the statement of Allah, the Exalted:

"Say: Who is it that delivers you from the darknesses (hardships) of the land and the sea?"

In any case, for the oppressor, the Hereafter is a very costly bargain; may Allah, the Exalted, protect us from oppression. There are many types of oppression: disbelief (kufr) and associating partners with Allah (shirk) are also oppression; sin and immorality are also oppression; to harm someone or to usurp someone's right is also oppression. Furthermore, their levels are also different; thus, the worst oppression is disbelief and shirk, followed by usurping the rights of others. The kind of oppression committed will result in a corresponding darkness on the Day of Resurrection. Whatever a person sows, he will reap the same in the Hereafter.

This hadith also contains consolation and reassurance for the oppressed, that if the oppressed desires that the oppressor receives the severest and harshest punishment, then he should be patient in this world, because there is no punishment greater than that of the Hereafter. The oppressed should be patient in this world; the oppressor will certainly face punishment for his oppression in the Hereafter.
