Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, Islam began as something strange, and soon it will return to being strange just as it began, so glad tidings are for the strangers.” It was asked: O Messenger of Allah! Who are the strangers? He said: “Those who will rectify (the Sunnahs) when people corrupt them.”

Brief Explanation
Explanation: -
① “Gharib” refers to a stranger and one without a homeland. In the beginning, this was the state of Islam: no one knew it, and society was not ready to accept it. Gradually, people began to understand and accept it, until Islam became dominant everywhere and disbelief and polytheism were eradicated.
② After the era of the Rightly Guided Caliphs (Khulafa-e-Rashideen), innovations (bid‘ah) began to appear in Islam. In later periods, Muslims adopted the customs and ideas of non-Muslims, and thus the true Islam became limited to only a few people, while the majority considered self-invented customs and incorrect beliefs and practices to be the true Islam.
③ The strangers who have been congratulated are those people who, amidst the abundance of innovations (bid‘ah), continue to act upon the Sunnah, who, when incorrect beliefs become widespread, remain steadfast upon correct beliefs, and who, in times of moral decline, adopt true Islamic morals.
④ The criterion for truth and falsehood does not depend on adopting a particular name, but rather on conformity or opposition to the Qur’an and Hadith. [سنن ابن ماجه : 301/5]
