It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, that indeed the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, raced with a man and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, outran him. The Muslims were very pleased at this. Then that man said to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "O Messenger of Allah! (Let us) race again." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Yes." So he raced with him (again), and that man outran the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. This was displeasing to the Prophet and his companions. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, it is Allah's way that whatever thing He raises in the world, He also brings it down."
In this hadith, it is mentioned that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself raced with the Bedouin, whereas in Sahih Bukhari (2871) and other books, it is stated that there was a race between the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam she-camel and the Bedouin’s camel. It is possible that this is the same incident, meaning the race was between the camels, but some narrators, attributing it to their owners, described it as a race between the individuals. It is also possible that these are two separate incidents. And Allah knows best. In any case, in this, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has stated one of Allah’s laws and decrees: that He does not grant perpetual progress and ascendancy to anything in this world; ultimately, there is decline and downfall. There are many wisdoms of Allah in this, one of which is that no one becomes arrogant due to progress and ascendancy; through decline and downfall, he is warned that there is a Being who is the Most High above all.
