Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed the spoils of the Battle of Hunayn at the place of Ja‘ranah. Some pieces were in the lap of Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him). During this, a man came and said: O Muhammad (peace be upon him)! Be just! You are not acting justly. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Woe to you! If I do not act justly, then who will act justly?” Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to strike the neck of this hypocrite. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Leave him. For he has some companions (the narrator is unsure about a word here) who will recite the Qur’an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will go out of the religion just as an arrow passes through its target.”
