Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The example of the generous person and the miser is like two men who have worn two coats of armor made of iron. (The narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words) two cloaks that cover them from their chests to their necks. When the generous person intends to spend, its knot loosens (i.e., it goes down), until it covers the tips of his feet and hides the marks of his steps (i.e., it falls to the ground). And when the miser intends to spend, his armor becomes tight for him, and every ring of it clings together, until it seizes his neck.” Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I bear witness that I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gesturing with his blessed hand in this manner. Then Sufyan gestured towards his throat with his hand, indicating that the person tries to open it but it does not open. He did this twice.
