Sayyiduna Wa'il bin Hujr Hadrami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when he would begin the prayer, he would raise his hands; when he would go into bowing (ruku‘), and when he would raise his head from bowing, at that time too he would raise his hands. I saw that when he (peace and blessings be upon him) would sit during the prayer, he would spread his left leg and keep his right foot upright. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would place his left hand on his left knee and keep it open, while he would place his right hand on his right knee, in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) would close two fingers and make a circle with them, and in this manner he would supplicate.
Imam Humaydi (may Allah have mercy on him) indicated this by gesturing with the index finger. Sayyiduna Wa'il bin Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I then came there again in the winter season, and I saw that those people were raising their hands inside their shawls.
