Sayyiduna Abu Humayd Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed a man from the tribe of Azd as an official; his name was Ibn Lutbiyyah. He was appointed to collect charity. When that man returned, he said: “This is the wealth of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and this was given to me as a gift.” The narrator says, the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood on the pulpit, praised and glorified Allah, then said: “What is the matter? We appoint someone as an official and send him for some task, then he comes and says, ‘This is your wealth, and this was given to me as a gift.’ Why does he not sit in his father’s house or his mother’s house and see whether he receives any gift or not?” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “By Him in Whose hand is my soul, whoever among you receives anything in this way, then on the Day of Resurrection he will come carrying that thing on his neck. If it is a camel, it will be making its specific sound; if it is a cow, it will be making its specific sound; if it is a goat, it will be bleating.” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) raised both his hands until we saw the whiteness of his armpits. Then he prayed: “O Allah! Have I conveyed (the message)? O Allah! Have I conveyed (the message)?” The narrator named Sufyan says: The narrator named Hisham has narrated these additional words in this narration. Sayyiduna Abu Humayd (may Allah be pleased with him) says: My eyes saw this scene and my ears heard these words from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). You people can also ask Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) about this; he was also present there with me at that time.
