Hadith 637
637 - حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الزُّهْرِيُّ عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ : سَمِعَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - عُمَرَ وَهُوَ يَحْلِفُ بِأَبِيهِ ، فَقَالَ : «أَلَا إِنَّ اللهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ» ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ : فَوَاللهِ مَا حَلَفْتُ بِهَا بَعْدُ ذَاكِرًا وَلَا آثِرًا . ¤ قَالَ الْحُمَيْدِيُّ : قَالَ سُفْيَانُ : سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مَوْلَي آلِ طَلْحَةَ - وَكَانَ بَصِيرًا بِالْعَرَبِيَّةِ - يَقُولُ : وَلَا آثِرًا آثُرُهُ عَنْ غَيْرِي أُخْبِرُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ حَلَفَ بِهَا . ¤ حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ قَالَ: ثنا سُفْيَانُ، قَالَ: ثنا الزُّهْرِيُّ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: سَمِعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عُمَرَ وَهُوَ يَحْلِفُ بِأَبِيهِ، فَقَالَ: «أَلَا إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ» فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: «فَوَاللَّهِ مَا حَلَفْتُ بِهَا بَعْدُ، ذَاكِرًا وَلَا آثِرَا» قَالَ الْحُمَيْدِيُّ: قَالَ سُفْيَانُ: سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مَوْلَي آلِ طَلْحَةَ، وَكَانَ بَصِيرًا بِالْعَرَبِيَّةِ، يَقُولُ: «وَلَا آثِرًا آثُرَهُ عَنْ غَيْرِي أُخْبَرُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ حَلَفَ بِهَا»
Salim bin Abdullah narrates from his father: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) heard Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) swearing by his father. So he said: Beware! Allah Almighty has forbidden you from swearing by your forefathers. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: By Allah! After that, I never swore by (the name of) my forefathers, neither intentionally nor by mistake.
Imam Humaydi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Sufyan narrated this statement. I heard Muhammad bin Abdur Rahman saying: Those who had great mastery over the Arabic language used to say: The words of the narration «ولا آثرا» mean that I did not let anyone else do so either, about whom it was reported that he had sworn such an oath.
Imam Humaydi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Sufyan narrated this statement.
