Ikrimah narrates: When Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was informed that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had burned some apostates, that is, some heretics, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: If I were to kill them, it would be based on the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever changes his religion, kill him." But I would not burn them, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not appropriate for anyone to punish with the punishment of Allah, the Exalted." Sufyan says: Ammar Dahni was present in that gathering, that is, in the gathering of Amr bin Dinar, and Ayyub was narrating this hadith, so Ammar said: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) did not burn the people; Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had pits dug for them and had smoke made over them, until they were killed in this way. So Amr bin Dinar said: Have you not heard the poem of their killer: "Desires may throw me wherever they wish, as long as they do not throw me into those two pits, near which wood and fire were placed; there, death was immediate, not deferred."
