Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We set out with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), until when we reached a place called Qahah, some of us had put on ihram, and some had not. During this time, I noticed my companions signaling to each other. When I looked carefully, there was a wild cow (nilgai) there. I put a saddle on my horse and mounted it. I picked up my spear, but my stick fell down. I said to my companions: Hand it to me. They were in ihram, and they said: No, by Allah! We will not help you in any way. So I picked up my stick myself, then I approached the nilgai from behind; it was behind a mound at that time. I struck it with my spear and wounded it. I brought it to my companions, and some of them said: Eat it, and some said: Do not eat it. Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was ahead of us, so I moved my horse and reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I asked him about this matter, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is lawful, so eat it."
