Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Some Jews came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Abu al-Qasim! "Sam 'alayk" (death be upon you). So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Alaikum" (upon you too). Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said to them: Rather, death be upon you and curse be upon you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Aisha! Allah Almighty loves gentleness in every matter." Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Did you not hear what they said? They said: Death be upon you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So I have said: Upon you too."
Imam Humaydi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Sufyan sometimes used to say these words in this narration: "And upon you too." So when he was alerted to this, he omitted the letter "wa" (and).
