Narration on I’tikaf and Tents during Ramadan
Hadith 196
196 - قَالَ سُفْيَانُ سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَي بْنَ سَعِيدٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ: «أَرَادَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوَاخِرَ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ» فَسَمِعْتُ بِذَلِكَ فَاسْتَأَذَنْتُهُ «فَأَذِنَ لِي» ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَتْهُ حَفْصَةُ «فَأَذِنَ لَهَا» ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَتْهُ زَيْنَبُ «فَأَذِنَ لَهَا» قَالَتْ: فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ «إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ صَلَّي الصُّبْحَ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ فِي مُعْتَكَفِهِ» فَلَمَّا صَلَّي الصُّبْحَ رَأَي فِي الْمَسْجِدِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَبْنِيَةٍ فَقَالَ: «مَا هَذَا؟» قَالُوا: لِعَائِشَةَ، وَحَفْصَةَ، وَزَيْنَبَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «آلْبِرَّ يُرِدْنَ بِهَذَا؟» فَلَمْ يَعْتَكِفْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تِلْكَ الْعَشَرَةَ «فَاعْتَكَفَ عَشْرًا مِنْ شَوَّالٍ» قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ سُفْيَانُ فِي هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ: آلْبِرُّ تَقُولُونَ بِهِنَّ؟
Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to observe i’tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan. When I heard about this, I sought permission from him (to observe i’tikaf with him), and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted me permission. Then Sayyidah Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) sought permission, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) granted her permission as well. Then Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) requested permission from him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he granted her permission as well. Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to observe i’tikaf, he would go to his place of i’tikaf after performing the morning prayer. (On this occasion) when he (peace and blessings be upon him) had performed the morning prayer, he saw four tents pitched in the mosque. He (peace and blessings be upon him) inquired: “Whose are these?” The people replied: They belong to Sayyidah Aisha, Sayyidah Hafsa, and Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with them). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Have these women intended righteousness by means of these?” (The narrator states:) In this ten days, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not observe i’tikaf; he observed i’tikaf in the ten days of Shawwal.
Imam Humaydi (may Allah have mercy on him) states: Sometimes Sufyan narrated these words in the narration: “Do you think good of these women?”
