Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer voluntary prayers at night. I would be lying down between him (peace be upon him) and the Qiblah, in the widthwise direction. When he (peace be upon him) wanted to perform Witr, he would move me with his foot, then he (peace be upon him) would offer two units of prayer. If I was awake, he (peace be upon him) would converse with me, otherwise he (peace be upon him) would lie down. Then (after a short while) he (peace be upon him) would proceed to perform the (Fajr prayer in congregation). Sufyan, the narrator, has also expressed doubt in the narration transmitted from Nadr and has indicated confusion; sometimes he expresses doubt in the narration transmitted from Ziyad as well. He says: This narration has become mixed up for me. Then he said to us several times: The hadith of Abu Nadr is like this, while the narration transmitted from Ziyad is like this, and the narration transmitted from Muhammad bin Amr is like this.
Imam Humaydi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: This is exactly as I have mentioned.
