Hadith 116
Masruq narrates: It was said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): There is a person in the mosque saying that when the Day of Resurrection comes, smoke will reach the people, which will seize the hearing of the disbelievers. But the believers will feel something like a cold due to it. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting reclining, he sat up straight and said: O people! Whoever among you has knowledge of something, let him speak according to it, and whoever does not have knowledge, let him say regarding his lack of knowledge that Allah knows best, because it is also part of a man's knowledge that when he does not know something, he should say: Allah knows best. Whereas Allah Almighty has said to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Say: I do not ask you for any reward for this, nor am I of those who pretend." (Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, explained:) When the Quraysh did not follow the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed: "O Allah, impose upon them seven years (of famine) like the time of Yusuf." So famine seized them, which destroyed everything, until they began to eat bones, and it reached the point that one of them would look towards the sky and see smoke between himself and the sky. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "So watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke covering the people; this is a painful punishment." Allah Almighty said: "Indeed, We will remove the punishment a little, but you will surely return (to disbelief)." So this matter occurred in the world; will the punishment be removed from these disbelievers on the Day of Resurrection? Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The smoke has passed, the Lizam has passed, the incident of the moon has passed, the (victory of) Rome has passed, and the incident of Batshah (seizure) has also passed.
