Narration on Mentioning Surah Baqarah and Throwing Pebbles
Hadith 111
111 - حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْأَعْمَشَ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ الْحَجَّاجَ بْنَ يُوسُفَ يَقُولُ: لَا تَقُولُوا سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ وَلَا سُورَةُ كَذَا فَذَكَرْتُهُ لِإِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ النَّخَعِيِّ فَقَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، أَنَّهُ مَشَي مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ فِي بَطْنِ الْوَادِي فَلَمَّا أَتَي الْجَمْرَةَ جَعَلَهَا عَنْ يَمِينِهِ ثُمَّ اعْتَرَضَهَا فَرَمَاهَا، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ إِنَّ نَاسًا يَرْمُونَهَا مِنْ فَوْقِهَا، فَقَالَ «مِنْ هَاهُنَا وَالَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ رَأَيْتُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ رَمَاهَا»
A‘mash says: I heard Hajjaj bin Yusuf saying: Do not say “Surah al-Baqarah”, Surah so-and-so. A‘mash says: I mentioned this to Ibrahim al-Nakha‘i, so he informed me: ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Yazid told me this, that once he was walking with Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah bin Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in the lower part of the valley. When they came to the Jamrah, Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah placed it on his right side and then came opposite to it, then he threw pebbles at it. I said to him: O Abu ‘Abdur-Rahman! People throw pebbles from above. He replied: By the One besides whom there is no deity, I saw the one upon whom Surah al-Baqarah was revealed throwing pebbles from here.
