Abu Majid Hanafi narrates: I was present with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) when a man brought a drunkard. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Shake him a little or smell his mouth. The narrator says: He was shaken and his mouth was smelled, and he was intoxicated. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Imprison him, so he was imprisoned. The next day, that person was brought there, and I was also present. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) called for a whip, and a whip was brought to him with a fruit attached to it. By his order, the fruit was removed, then its edge was made thin until it became a lash. The narrator says: He gestured with his finger in this way and said to the one administering the lashes: Strike him, and take your hand back, and give each limb its due. He was lashed in such a way that he was wearing a shirt and an izar (lower garment). (The narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words:) He was wearing a shirt and trousers. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is not appropriate for any official that when a person liable for hadd is brought to him, he does not carry out the hadd. As for the rest, Allah is Forgiving and loves to forgive. A man said: O Abu Abdur Rahman! This is my nephew, I have no children, but I do not feel the same love for him in my heart as I feel for my own children. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! Then you are the worst guardian of an orphan; neither did you give him good upbringing nor did you conceal his fault. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I know this, that the first person whose hand the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had cut off (who was he?)—a man from the Ansar was brought who had stolen, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had his hand cut off. At that time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in such a state as if dust had been thrown on his face. Here, the narrator Sufyan gestured towards his face with his palm and closed his palm a little. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! Perhaps this matter did not please you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “What is there to prevent me, but do not become helpers of Satan against your brother. It is not appropriate for any governor that when a case of hadd is brought to him, he does not carry it out. As for the rest, Allah is Forgiving and loves to forgive.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: “They should forgive and overlook. Do you not love that Allah should forgive you?” Sufyan says: I came to Yahya al-Jabir, and he said to me: Take out your tablet. I said: I do not have a tablet. At that time, he narrated this hadith to me and also narrated other hadiths, so I did not remember this hadith until he narrated it to me again. Sufyan says: So it is as if I memorized this hadith twice.
