Hadiths of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him)
Narration about throwing the first arrow in Allah’s cause
Hadith 78
78 - حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ سَمِعْتُ قَيْسَ بْنَ أَبِي حَازِمٍ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ سَعْدَ بْنَ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ يَقُولُ: «أَنَا أَوَّلُ مَنْ رَمَي بِسَهْمٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ، وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَابِعَ سَبْعَةٍ وَمَا لَنَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا الْحُبْلَةَ وَوَرَقَ السَّمُرَ حَتَّي لَقَدْ قَرِحَتْ أَشْدَاقُنَا حَتَّي إِنْ كَانَ أَحَدُنَا لَيَضَعُ مِثْلَ مَا تَضَعُ الشَّاةُ مَا لَهُ خِلْطٌ، ثُمَّ أَصْبَحَتَ بَنُو أَسَدٍ تُعَزِّرُنِي عَلَي الدِّينِ لَقَدْ ضَلَلْتُ إِذًا وَخَابَ عَمَلِي»
Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I am the first person who shot an arrow in the path of Allah, and I remember about myself that I was the seventh individual to support the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). At that time, we had nothing to eat except leaves and such things, which used to make our mouths sore. To the extent that any one of us would defecate just as a goat drops pellets. There was nothing mixed in it (i.e., it was completely dry). Now, “Banu Asad” criticize me in religious matters; if that is so, then I have gone astray and my deeds have been wasted.
