‘Amir bin Sa’d narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him): At the time of the conquest of Makkah, I became ill in Makkah, so ill that I reached the brink of death. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit me. I said: O Messenger of Allah! I have a lot of wealth and my only heir is my one daughter, so may I give away two-thirds of my wealth in charity? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No.” I said: Half? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No.” I said: One-third? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Give one-third! And one-third is still much. If you leave your heirs wealthy, that is better than leaving them poor, begging from people. Whatever you spend, you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you put in your wife’s mouth.” I said: O Messenger of Allah! Will I be left behind in my migration? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You will not be left behind from me. Whatever deed you do, seeking Allah’s pleasure, it will increase your rank and status. Perhaps you will live after me so that many people will benefit from you and many others will be harmed by you.” (Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed): “O Allah, keep the migration of my companions intact and do not turn them back on their heels, but Sa’d bin Khawlah—alas for him.” (Sayyiduna Sa’d, may Allah be pleased with him, says) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) expressed sorrow for him because he died in Makkah. Sufyan, the narrator, says: Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Khawlah (may Allah be pleased with him) belonged to the “Banu ‘Amir bin Lu’ayy.”
