Ubaydullah bin Abu Rafi’, who was the scribe of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me, Zubair, and Miqdad and said: “You all go and reach the garden of ‘Khakh’ (which is the name of a place twelve miles from Madinah), there will be a woman there, with whom there will be a letter, you all take it from her.” (Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) says) We set out. We rode our horses swiftly until we reached that garden, and there was a woman present. We said: Take out the letter. She said: I have no letter. We said: Take out the letter or we will remove your covering. So she took it out from within her hair bun. We presented ourselves before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it was written in it: It was from Hatib bin Abi Balta’ah to some polytheists residing in Makkah, in which he informed them about the Noble Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) departure (towards Makkah). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Hatib, what was this? Sayyiduna Hatib (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Do not be hasty regarding me. I am a person who lives among the Quraysh but I am not one of them. The other Muhajirin who are with you, they have relatives there, due to which their families and properties are protected. I wanted, since I have no blood relation with the Quraysh, to do them a favor so that they would protect my relatives. I did not do this out of disbelief, or apostasy from my religion, or being pleased with disbelief after accepting Islam. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He has spoken the truth to you. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to strike the neck of this hypocrite. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He participated in Badr. What do you know? Perhaps Allah, the Exalted, has addressed the people of Badr saying: Do whatever you wish, I have forgiven you. Amr bin Dinar says: Regarding this, the verse was revealed: “O you who believe! Do not take My enemy and your enemy as friends.” Sufyan says: I do not know whether this is part of the narration or the statement of Amr bin Dinar.
