Hadith 30
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Once Sayyiduna Umar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) performed some prayers but after them he did not sit to meet the people. Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I came to his door and said: O Yarfa! (He was the servant of Sayyiduna Umar ibn Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him) Is the Commander of the Faithful ill? He replied: The Commander of the Faithful is not ill. (Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, says) I sat there, and during that time Sayyiduna Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) came, so he also sat there. Yarfa came out and said: O Ibn Affan! O Ibn Abbas! Please come. So we went to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). In front of him were some piles of wealth, and with each pile was a vessel. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I have reviewed the people of Madinah and found you two to be such that your families have the most members present here, so you both take this wealth and distribute it, and whatever remains, return it. So Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) joined both his hands and took whatever came, but I sat on my knees and said: If this is less, will you give us more? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is a piece of the hardest thing. (The narrator says:) By this is meant a stone from a mountain (i.e., Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, praised Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, by likening him to his father in his courage and presenting correct opinions). Sayyiduna Umar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Will there be no value in the sight of Allah Almighty for that thing which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions «كِدْ» used to eat? I said: Yes! By Allah, in the sight of Allah Almighty, this matter is valuable. If the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were alive and conquests had been granted to him, then the practice of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have been different from yours. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and said: Then what should the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) have done? I said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) would have eaten himself and allowed us to eat as well. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep until his ribs started to move, then he said: My wish is that I come out of this matter on equal footing, neither do I get anything nor is anything obligatory upon me.
