Malik bin Aws narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: The lands of Banu Nadir are those which Allah Almighty granted to His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as "fay’" (spoils without battle). The Muslims had not made their horses run for them, nor had they mounted rides for them; these were exclusively for the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would take from their income the yearly expenses for his family, and whatever remained, he would use for horses and weapons, that is, for preparation in the way of Allah. Humaydi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Sufyan has narrated these words in this narration: "The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would set aside the yearly expenses from it."
