Hadith 12
12 - حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ دِينَارٍ أَوَّلًا قَبْلَ أَنْ نَلْقَي الزُّهْرِيَّ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَوْسِ بْنِ الْحَدَثَانِ قَالَ: أَتَيْتُ بِمِائَةِ دِينَارٍ أَبْغِي بِهَا صَرْفًا، فَقَالَ طَلْحَةُ: عِنْدَنَا صَرْفٌ انْتَظِرْ يَأْتِي خَازِنُنَا مِنَ الْغَابَةِ وَأَخَذَ مِنِّي الْمِائَةَ دِينَارٍ فَقَالَ لِي عُمَرُ: " لَا تُفْارِقْهُ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «الذَّهَبُ بِالْوَرِقِ رِبًا إِلَّا هَا وَهَا، وَالْبُرُّ بِالْبُرِّ رِبًا إِلَّا هَا وَهَا، وَالشَّعِيرُ بِالشَّعِيرِ رِبًا إِلَّا هَا وَهَا، وَالتَّمْرُ بِالتَّمْرِ رِبًا إِلَّا هَا وَهَا» فَلَمَّا جَاءَ الزُّهْرِيُّ لَمْ يَذْكُرْ هَذَا الْكَلَامَ ¤ وَسَمِعْتُ الزُّهْرِيَّ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ مَالِكَ بْنَ أَوْسِ بْنِ الْحَدَثَانِ النَّصْرِيَّ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «الذَّهَبُ بِالْوَرِقِ رِبًا إِلَّا هَا وَهَا، وَالْبُرُّ بِالْبُرِّ رِبًا إِلَّا هَا وَهَا، وَالشَّعِيرُ بِالشَّعِيرِ رِبًا إِلَّا هَا وَهَا، وَالتَّمْرُ بِالتَّمْرِ رِبًا إِلَّا هَا وَهَا» قَالَ الْحُمَيْدِيُّ: قَالَ سُفْيَانُ: وَهَذَا أَصَحُّ حَدِيثٍ رُوِيَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي هَذَا يَعْنِي فِي الصَّرْفِ ¤
Sayyiduna Malik bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came with one hundred dinars, intending to conduct a "Bay' Sarf" (exchange transaction) with them. Sayyiduna Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We want to do "Bay' Sarf", so wait until our treasurer comes from "Ghabah". He took one hundred dinars from me, so Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: Do not separate from him, because I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Exchanging gold for silver is usury except when it is hand to hand. Exchanging wheat for wheat is usury except when it is hand to hand. Exchanging barley for barley is usury except when it is hand to hand. Exchanging dates for dates is usury except when it is hand to hand." The narrator says: When Zuhri came, he did not narrate this statement. However, I heard Zuhri narrate this, he says: I heard Malik bin Aws narrate this, he says: I heard Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate this, he says: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Exchanging gold for silver is usury except when it is hand to hand. Exchanging wheat for wheat is usury except when it is hand to hand. Exchanging barley for barley is usury except when it is hand to hand. Exchanging dates for dates is usury except when it is hand to hand." Humaydi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Sufyan narrated this, and among the narrations transmitted on this subject, this narration is the most authentic. Sufyan meant that regarding "Bay' Sarf", this is the most authentic narration transmitted.
