Musnad al-Humaydi
Hadiths of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)
Warning of punishment for reciting a verse and not stopping the oppressor
Hadith 3
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ قَالَ: ثنا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ الْفَزَارِيُّ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقَ قَامَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَي عَلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ ﴿ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لَا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ﴾ وَإِنَّا سَمِعْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «النَّاسُ إِذَا رَأَوُا الظَّالِمَ فَلَمْ يَأْخُذُوا عَلَي يَدَيْهِ يُوشِكُ أَنْ يَعُمَّهُمُ اللَّهُ بِعِقَابٍ» .
Qais bin Abu Hazim narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up, praised and glorified Allah, and then said: O people! You recite this verse. «يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ» "O you who believe! Take care of your own selves. If you are guided, no one who goes astray can harm you." [5-المائدة:105] (Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said:) We heard Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When people see an oppressor and do not restrain him by his hand, soon Allah’s punishment will descend upon all of them."
