Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about fasting, so he (peace be upon him) said (that is, he recited this): “Until the white thread becomes distinct.” Sayyiduna ‘Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I took two threads, one of them was white and the other was black. I kept observing both of them, then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (said something). The narrator named Sufyan says: I do not remember the exact words of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but what was meant was night and day. Sufyan was asked: Did you hear this from Mujahid? He replied: Yes. He explained it very well, but I could not remember the complete wording of the narration.
