Sayyiduna Iyas bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not beat Allah’s maidservants (i.e., women)." The narrator states: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: O Messenger of Allah! Since you have forbidden beating them, women have become bold towards their husbands. So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted the people (to discipline them). People started beating them, and then many women came to the wives of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Last night, seventy women came to the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). All of them complained about their husbands. You will not find those people (who beat their wives) to be the best among you." (i.e., a person who beats his wife is not good)

Benefit: In this hadith, it is prohibited to beat wives; what is meant here is that beating which causes her bones, etc., to break. Light admonishment or striking with a miswak (tooth-stick), etc., for the sake of discipline is permissible. It is due to lack of knowledge that men oppress their wives and lose control over trivial matters. May Allah Ta'ala grant the Muslim Ummah understanding of the Qur'an and Hadith. Furthermore, it is also understood from this hadith that the oppressed may convey their complaint to the ruler of the time, and this is not considered backbiting.

´It was narrated that Iyas bin 'Abdullah bin Abu Dhubab said:` "The Prophet said: 'Do not beat the female slaves of Allah.' Then 'Umar came to the Prophet and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the woman have become bold towards their husbands? So order the beatin g of them,' and they were beaten. Then many women went around to the family of Muhammad,. The next day he said: 'Last night seventy women came to the family of Muhammad, each woman complaining about her husband. You will not find that those are the best of you.' "

Benefits and Issues: ➊ Moderation is necessary in hitting or disciplining. Strictness should only be to the extent that the husband's authority is maintained over the wife.
➋ The oppressed may complain about the oppressor to someone who has the power to prevent the oppression.
➌ A woman may go to another house for a minor task for a short period without her husband's permission.
