Hadith 888

Sufyan says: I have been informed that Zuhri says this in the narration: although I have not heard this from Zuhri himself. "Fasting during travel is not righteousness." (i.e., there is some difference in the pronunciation of the words here)

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit:
In the state of travel, both fasting and not fasting are permissible. However, for those people who would face severe hardship by fasting during travel and would become so exhausted that they become a burden upon others, for such people, not fasting is better than fasting. Regarding people who find themselves in such a condition, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said that fasting while traveling is not virtuous for them. Rather, such people should abandon fasting, and after the end of Ramadan, they should make up the missed fasts (qada); this is better for them.
