Amr bin Dinar says: I said to Jabir bin Zaid: People say that the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade eating the meat of domesticated donkeys. So he replied: Sayyiduna Hakam bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this to us from the Prophet (peace be upon him), but the ocean of knowledge, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), did not accept this. He recited this verse: «قُلْ لا أَجِدُفِيمَاأُوحِيَإِلَيَّمُحَرَّمًا» (6-al-An'am:145) "Say: I do not find, in what has been revealed to me, anything forbidden..."

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The people of pre-Islamic times used to eat some things and leave others alone, considering them unclean. Then Allah sent His Prophet ﷺ and sent down His Book, marking some things lawful and others unlawful; so what He made lawful is lawful, what he made unlawful is unlawful, and what he said nothing about is allowable. And he recited: "Say: I find not in the message received by me by inspiration any (meat) forbidden to be eaten by one who wishes to eat it. . . . " up to the end of the verse.

Benefits and Issues: Benefit: The basic principle regarding matters of custom is permissibility. Except in cases where there is a ruling of their being prohibited. And this ruling can only be known through revelation. Not through personal desires; therefore, those things whose prohibition is not explicitly stated in the Shari‘ah, the noble scholars, based on the principles of Shari‘ah and the properties and characteristics of those things, determine their ruling. Therefore, one should refer to the trustworthy scholars of each region. For further explanation of the noble verse, Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan and similar works may be consulted.
