Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit:
Due to the knowledge and virtue of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma, he is referred to as « بحر الأمة يا حبر الأمة». And his statement regarding donkeys was due to the fact that the hadith had not reached him with clear explanation. In the Sahihayn, his statement is narrated on the authority of Shu’bi that: I do not know whether, on the occasion of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade the eating of donkey meat because he did not want people to be deprived of riding animals, or whether he declared it unlawful. However, when the hadiths explicitly declaring its prohibition reached him, and after he discussed the matter with Sayyiduna Ali ibn Abi Talib radi Allahu anhu, he became firmly convinced of its prohibition. (Fawa’id Ibn al-Qayyim, Sunan Abi Dawud: 3/4... Darussalam).
