Hadith 875

Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) or Sayyiduna Ibn Mu'adh Taymi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed the people at Mina to camp at their respective places of stay, so the Muhajirun and Ansar camped in their specific valleys. The narrator states: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) taught the people the rites of Hajj. The narrator says: Allah opened our hearing, so while staying at our place of encampment, we heard the voice of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Among the teachings the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us was this: He said, "When you throw pebbles at the Jamrah, do so with a pebble that fits between your fingers."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit:
He opened the ears. This too was a miracle of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that his voice was being heard throughout Mina, even though Mina covers several square miles. The pebbles for throwing (khadhf) are those small ones which, if they hit someone, would not cause a wound nor inflict an injury. These could be easily thrown by holding them between two fingers.

Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
1957. Commentary:
➊ This was a miracle of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that people at a distance heard his sermon in their respective places.
➋ "Placed the index fingers"—this either means that he put them in his ears and then spoke in a loud voice. This meaning is supported by a version of Abu Dawud in which the addition of « فی اذنیه)‎» is found. (Nayl al-Awtar) Or it is possible that he placed his fingers between his thumbs and gestured to indicate: "Throw small pebbles like this." (Badh al-Majhul)

Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) "Ears were opened"—this too was a miracle of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), that his voice was being heard throughout the whole of Mina, even though Mina covers several square miles.

(2) "When the matter of pebbles came"—another translation of this phrase would be: "until you reached near the Jamaraat and you pelted the Jamaraat with pebbles used for khadhf (stone-throwing)." Both meanings are possible.

(3) "Pebbles of khadhf"—that is, small pebbles, such that even if they hit someone, they would not cause a wound or injury. Children used to practice target-throwing with such pebbles. These could be easily thrown by holding them between two fingers.
