Hadith 848

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Asid Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the drop of fluid remains in the womb for forty days (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps the words are) forty-five days, then an angel comes to it. He asks: O my Lord! Is it wretched or blessed? Is it male or female? So whatever answer Allah Almighty gives, both matters are recorded. Then the deeds of that person, his sustenance, the end of his lifespan, the remaining things for him, and the matters that will befall him are all recorded. Then this scroll is folded up; there is no addition or subtraction in it." Sometimes the narrator named Sufyan would narrate these words: "This remains so until the Day of Resurrection," however, sometimes he would not mention these words.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit:
After the forty-day period of the drop of fluid (nutfah), the angel, by the command of Allah Ta'ala, writes in the aforementioned thing. Within forty days, the drop of fluid (nutfah) becomes a clot (‘alaqah), a lump of flesh (mudghah), and an unformed substance (ghayr mukhallaqah). This is the preferred (rajih) view. Some have misunderstood its meaning, thinking that it remains a drop of fluid (nutfah) for forty days, then a clot (‘alaqah) for forty days, then a lump of flesh (mudghah) for forty days; they have derived these forty-forty periods from «مثل ذلك». However, the meaning of «مثـل ذلك» is that the formation occurs in this manner. All these stages occur within forty days.
