Nafi’ bin Jubair narrates: Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed Sayyiduna Jarir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) as the commander of a military expedition. On the way, they were struck by severe cold, so Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) brought them back. Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: Why did you bring them back? Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Whoever does not show mercy to people, Allah does not show mercy to him.” Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) then asked: Did you hear this from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) himself? He replied: “Yes.”
