Abu Ubaid narrates: I participated in the Eid prayer with Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He performed the prayer before delivering the sermon and then stated this: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting on these two days: the day of Eid al-Fitr and the day of Eid al-Adha. As for the day of Eid al-Fitr, it is a day when you finish fasting, so on that day you should eat and drink. As for the day of Eid al-Adha, on that day you should eat from your sacrificial meat. The narrator says: Then I participated in the Eid prayer behind Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), and that day was also a Friday. He performed the prayer before delivering the sermon and then stated this: Today is a day in which Allah Almighty has combined two Eids for the Muslims, so among those present from the surrounding areas, if anyone wishes to return, we permit him, and whoever wishes to stay, may stay. The narrator says: Then I participated in the Eid prayer behind Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), and he performed the prayer before delivering the sermon and stated this: No one should keep his sacrificial meat for more than three days.
Imam Abu Bakr Humaydi (may Allah have mercy on him) states: The scholars of hadith have narrated these words from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) as a "Marfu'" hadith, but Sufyan said: To my recollection, this narration is not transmitted as a "Marfu'" hadith. In any case, this narration is "Mansukh" (abrogated).
