Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas’s (may Allah be pleased with him) son, Mus’ab, narrates: I performed prayer beside my father, and I placed both my hands between my knees. He forbade me from doing so and said: We used to do this before, then we were prohibited from it (i.e., the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade us).

Explanation & Benefits

Benefit: The meaning of "tatbeeq" is to join both hands together in bowing (ruku‘), interlacing the fingers, and placing them between the thighs. Previously, bowing was performed in this manner, but then this method was abrogated. Now, in the state of bowing (ruku‘), both hands should be placed on the knees in such a way as to grasp the knees. (Sunan Abi Dawud: 730, its chain is authentic – Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi: 304)
