Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of a good companion is like that of a perfume seller; even if he does not give you his perfume, its fragrance will still reach you. And the example of a bad companion is like that of a blacksmith; even if he does not burn you with his sparks, his bad smell will still reach you."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit: In this hadith, the example of a good and a bad friend is given. A good friend is like perfume, from whom only benefit is gained; there is no expectation of harm or evil. Such a friend will be a cause of good reputation in this world and the Hereafter, and ultimately will become a means of entering Paradise. A bad friend will prove to be a source of harm for one’s honor, wealth, and faith, and in the end will take one along to Hell. The company of a bad friend will destroy both this world and the Hereafter.
From this, it is also understood that people should be taught using simple, relatable examples. It is also established that the profession of selling perfume is a good and virtuous occupation. No one should consider the profession of a blacksmith to be bad because of this. There are many perfumers who are bad people, and many who work with iron who are good people. This is merely an example that has been given; the permissibility or impermissibility of a profession is not intended.
