Hadith 785

Shu’bah says: I was with Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash’ari’s son, Sayyiduna Abu Burdah, in the room at the back of his house. He called his children and said: O my children! Come forward so that I may narrate to you the hadith which I heard my father narrate from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): I heard my father say, he said: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Whoever frees a neck (i.e., a slave man or woman), Allah Almighty will free every limb of his in exchange for every limb of that (slave man or woman) from the Hellfire.”

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit:
The virtue of freeing slaves is mentioned in this hadith. In another hadith it is stated:
“It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: Whoever frees a Muslim from slavery, Allah will free every limb of his (the slave’s) in exchange for every limb of the one who freed him from the Fire of Hell.”

In another hadith, it is clarified which type of slaves are more virtuous to free. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr radi Allahu anhu says: “I asked the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, ‘Which deed is best?’ He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: ‘To have faith in Allah and to strive in His path (jihad).’ I then asked, ‘Which slaves is it best to free?’ He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: ‘Those slaves who are of high value and are more beloved to their owners.’ I asked, ‘If I am unable to do that?’ He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ‘Then help someone who works, or teach some work to an unskilled, inexperienced person.’ I asked, ‘If I am unable to do even that?’ He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ‘Then refrain from harming people, for this too is a charity which you give to your own self.’”
