Ibn Abu Najeeh narrates from his father that a man asked Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about fasting on the day of Arafah. Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied: I performed Hajj with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not fast on that day. I performed Hajj with Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he also did not fast on that day. I performed Hajj with Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he also did not fast on that day. I performed Hajj with Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and he also did not fast on that day. Therefore, I will not fast on that day, nor will I command it, nor will I prohibit it.
