Takhrij al-Hadith:
[وأخرجه مسلم 2020، من حديث ما لك به]
Jurisprudential Explanation:
➊ It is understood that eating and drinking with the left hand without a valid (shar‘i) excuse is prohibited. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade eating with the left hand and walking in a single shoe. See: [الموطأ ح:104، وصحيح مسلم 2099/70]
➋ It is necessary to observe the etiquettes of the Shari‘ah in eating, drinking, and all worldly matters.
➌ The devils (shayatin) from among the jinn eat and drink.
➍ Eating and drinking with the left hand without excuse is the way of Shaytan.

Benefits:
➊ From this hadith, it is understood that eating and drinking with the left hand is forbidden (haram), because it involves imitation of Satan, and the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: «من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم» “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” [ابوداؤد عن ابن عمر لباس 4] And see [صحيح ابي داود 3401] — when imitation of sinful and immoral people is forbidden, then imitation of Satan is, all the more so, forbidden.
➋ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to his stepson, ‘Umar ibn Abi Salamah (radi Allahu anhu): «يا غلام سم الله وكل بيمينك وكل مما يليك» “O boy, say ‘Bismillah’, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you.” [صحيح بخاري/الاطعمة 3]
A man began to eat with his left hand in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), so he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Eat with your right hand.” He replied, “I cannot eat with it.” He only said this out of arrogance, so the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Then you will not be able to.” After that, he was never able to raise his right hand to his mouth.
