618 - قَالَ سُفْيَانُ: وَحَدَّثَنَا مُجَمِّعُ بْنُ يَحْيَي الْأَنْصَارِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ بْنِ سَهْلٍ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، بِمِثْلِهِ
This same narration is transmitted with another chain of narration on the authority of Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him).

In these ahadith, the response to the adhan is mentioned. Just as the words of the adhan are, so too is the response to the adhan; the listener should repeat just as the mu’adhdhin says, except in response to «حي على الفلاح ، حي على الصلاة», one should say «لا حول ولا قوة الا بالله», and similarly, in response to «الصلاة خير من النوم», the same words should be said.
When the mu’adhdhin says «أشهد أن محمدا رسول الله», then in response, these same words will be repeated. Some people, after the word “Muhammad,” say «صلى الله عليه وسلم», but do not repeat the entire phrase, which is not correct. And at the conclusion of the adhan, this supplication should be recited: «اللهم رب هذه الدعوة التامة ۔ ۔ ۔ »[صحيح البخاري : 614].
Some people are negligent in responding to the adhan, even though great virtue has been reported regarding it.
