Benefit:
It is established from this hadith that it is not permissible to narrate from the books of the People of the Book, leaving aside the Qur’an and Hadith. The Interpreter of the Qur’an, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma, says: “O group of Muslims! How is it that you ask the People of the Book, while your Book, which was revealed to the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, is the freshest of all news coming from Allah the Exalted? You read it in such a state that there is no adulteration in it, and Allah the Exalted has informed you that what Allah had written, the People of the Book altered, and they changed Allah’s Book with their own hands, and they said: ‘This is from Allah the Exalted,’ so that they might gain a small price thereby. So, does not the knowledge that has come to you prevent you from asking them? No, by Allah! We have not seen any one of them asking you about what has been revealed to you.” [صحيح البخاري :2688]
