Hadith 594

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are two habits which are easy, but those who act upon them are few. Whoever among the Muslims regularly performs them will enter Paradise." The people asked: O Messenger of Allah! What are those two? The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "After every prayer, recite «سبحان الله» ten times, recite «الله أكبر» ten times, and recite «الحمد لله» ten times. And at bedtime, recite «سبحان الله» thirty-three times, recite «الحمد لله» thirty-three times, and recite «الله أكبر» thirty-four times." Then Sufyan explained: One of these phrases is to be recited thirty-four times, so in this way, it will be 250 phrases on the tongue daily, and in the record of deeds, it will be 2500 phrases. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) counting with his blessed hand to show this, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who among you commits 2500 sins daily?" The people asked: O Messenger of Allah! Why can't these be recited regularly? The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Satan comes to a person and says: Remember such-and-such, remember such-and-such, until the person gets up (i.e., after the prayer he gets up) and does not recite these phrases." This is the first narration about which we asked Ata. When Ata came to Basra, Ayyub instructed the people to go to him and ask him about this narration.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit:
In this hadith, the virtue of saying Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar at various occasions has been mentioned. We should be diligent in reciting them at their prescribed times. In this hadith, the count after prayer is ten, whereas in other ahadith, Subhan Allah (33 times), Alhamdulillah (33 times), and Allahu Akbar (34 times) are mentioned. Both ahadith are authentic. It is also understood from this that the scale (on the Day of Judgment) is true.

1356. Commentary: In the aforementioned hadiths, there is an instruction to mention a specific number in remembrance (dhikr), therefore, counting tasbihat (words of glorification) and other forms of remembrance is a legislated act. The method of doing so is also transmitted from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, as Abdullah bin Amr radi Allahu anhu states: I saw the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam counting tasbihat with his right hand. [سنن أبي داود ، الوتر ، حدیث : 1502] However, for the person for whom counting tasbihat on the fingers of the right hand is truly difficult and hard, then for such a person, using the left hand or any other means for this purpose will, insha Allah, be permissible. «لا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلا وُسْعَهَا» [البقرة : 286 : 2] And Allah knows best.
