In this hadith, the Khawarij are mentioned. We consider it appropriate to provide some introduction about them: The Khawarij have various names and titles. They are called "Khawarij" because they rebelled (khuruj) against Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu. They are also called "Hukmiyyah" because they refused to accept Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari and Amr ibn al-As radi Allahu anhum as arbiters (hakim). Their claim was that only Allah Ta'ala is the Judge, whereas Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu had accepted these two as arbiters. They are also called "Haruriyyah" because this group, after leaving the side of Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu, camped at a place called Harura. They are also called "Shurat" because they claimed, "We have sold our lives in the path of Allah." They are also called "Mariqah" because they exited from the religion, as the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam informed about them that they will exit from the religion just as an arrow passes through its prey. Then they will not be able to return to the religion; thus, these people have exited from the religion of Islam, the community, and the unity of Islam. They have deviated from the straight path. They are rebels against the Islamic government. They have drawn swords against the caliphs. They have declared the wealth and blood of others lawful. They have declared their opponents to be disbelievers. They have reviled the Companions radi Allahu anhum ajma'in and the helpers of the religion, expressed disavowal from them, and declared them to be disbelievers and perpetrators of major sins. They considered opposition to them permissible. They denied the punishment of the grave and the Pond of Kawthar, rejected the intercession of Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, considered sinful Muslims to be eternally in Hell, and said: Whoever lies, commits a minor or major sin, and dies without repentance, is a disbeliever and destined for Hell. Their claim is that the congregation is only behind the Imam and not anyone else. They have fifteen sects. For details, study Ghunyat al-Talibin (p. 4, 216).
In this hadith, the role of Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu in eradicating the Khawarij is mentioned, that he killed them. Among the people, the name of the leader of the Khawarij was famous as "Hurqus" (Sunan Abi Dawud: 4770, its chain is hasan). Some details about this person are clarified in Sunan Abi Dawud (4770, its chain is hasan) as follows:
Abu Maryam said: That lame (Khariji) man used to be with us in the mosque in those days. Day and night we would sit with him. He was a poor man. I saw him among those needy ones who used to share food with Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu, which he would eat with the people. Abu Maryam said: The name of this lame man was Nafi' Dhu al-Thadiyyah (the one with a breast). His arm was like a woman's breast, and there was a nipple on his head, and on it were some hairs like a cat's whiskers. The "Daesh" (ISIS) of today are also Khawarij. Also, the meaning of "«الرمية»" is often taken as "bow," which is incorrect; rather, in the common lexicons, its meaning is "prey," and this is the correct meaning.
