Hadith 563

Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for something and he gave it to me. I asked him again and he gave it to me. I asked him again and he gave it to me. I asked him again and he gave it to me. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This wealth is lush and sweet. Whoever receives it with contentment of heart, there is blessing in it for him. And whoever receives it with greed, there is no blessing in it for him, and he is like the one who eats but is never satisfied. And the upper hand is better than the lower hand."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit:
From this hadith, evidence is found of the great generosity of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, that he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would not turn anyone away empty-handed. Also, in this hadith, the blameworthiness of greed for wealth is mentioned; a person should not be greedy. The "upper hand" refers to the one who spends (gives), and the "lower hand" refers to the one who asks without reason and without any valid Shar‘i excuse.

Explanation:
1:
Hakim bin Hizam radi Allahu anhu feared that if he began to accept what was given to him by people, this habit might exceed the limit to which he had no desire to reach.
For this reason, he even refused that which was his rightful due.
This is a lofty example of indifference towards the world (zuhd).
Umar radi Allahu anhu made people witnesses so that no one could later say that Umar radi Allahu anhu was unaware of the reality behind Hakim radi Allahu anhu’s refusal.
(And Allah knows best)
