Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was returning from the Battle of Uhud, a man came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I saw a cloud from which ghee and honey were raining down. I saw people collecting it in their palms. Some people were collecting more, and some less. Then I saw a rope going up towards the sky. You (peace be upon him) held it, and Allah, the Exalted, raised you up. After you, another man held it and he too was raised up. Then after him, another man held it and he too was raised up. Then after him, another man held it, but the rope broke. Then it was joined again, and he too was raised up."

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to interpret it." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "You may interpret it!" He said, "The cloud refers to Islam, and the ghee and honey raining from it, which people are collecting in their palms, refers to the Qur'an, its recitation, and its gentleness. Some people are attaining more of it, and some less. As for the rope going up to the sky, it refers to the truth upon which you (peace be upon him) are established. You held it, so Allah, the Exalted, granted you elevation. After you, another person will hold it and will attain elevation through it. Then after him, another person will hold it and will also attain elevation. Then after him, another person will hold it, but it will break. Then the rope will be joined for him, and he too will attain elevation. O Messenger of Allah! Have I interpreted it correctly?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "You have interpreted some of it correctly and in some you have erred." He said, "O Messenger of Allah! I ask you by Allah." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "O Abu Bakr! Do not swear."
