Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: What a day Thursday was! Then he began to weep, until his tears fell upon the ground. He was asked: O Abu Abbas! What happened on Thursday? So he replied: On Thursday, the pain of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) increased. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Bring me something so that I may write for you a document after which you will never go astray.” (Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, says) Then there was a disagreement among those present, although such disagreement in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was not appropriate. Someone said: What is the matter with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? Is what he says unclear? Ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The people asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again, so he said: “Leave me as I am. The state I am in is better than what you are calling me to.” Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised them regarding three things. He said: “Expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula, and honor the delegations as I used to honor them.” Sufyan says: The narrator named Sulaiman mentioned this, but I do not know whether the narrator named Saeed mentioned the third thing and I forgot it, or he did not mention the third thing at all.

Benefit: In this hadith, there is a mention of the severity of the fever a few days before the death of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. In this hadith, it is stated that he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam first said: "Bring me paper," then what he intended to dictate, he expressed verbally. Some misguided people misuse this hadith, which is not correct. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was a human being; he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would also experience fever and feel its pains. The noble Companions radi Allahu anhum were greatly grieved by his sallallahu alayhi wa sallam separation. It is also established from this that making a bequest (wasiyyah) in writing and verbally—both forms are valid.

Ibn Abbas said that the Prophet ﷺ gave three instructions saying “Expel the polytheists from Arabia, reward deputations as I did”. Ibn Abbas said “He either did not mention the third or I have been caused to forget it. Al Humaidi said on the authority of Sufyan that Sulaiman said “I do not know whether Saeed mentioned the third and I forgot or he himself did not mention it. ”

Benefits and Issues: ➊ The Arabian Peninsula is called a “peninsula” (jazirah) because it is surrounded by the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Since ancient times, it has been the homeland of the Arabs. Its boundaries in length stretch from Aden to the outskirts of Syria, and from Jeddah to the countryside of Iraq. (: Nayl al-Awtar, Chapter: Prohibition of the People of the Covenant from Residing in the Hijaz, 8/72) Since this is the first center of Islam, and from here Islam was to be spread throughout the world, it was and remains necessary to keep it safe from the deceit of the Jews and Christians. Through their conspiracies, the Jews distorted the face of Christianity, and both of them—indeed, even the Magians and polytheists—attempted to introduce innovations into Islam from the very beginning of Islam.
➋ The incident of forgetting the third matter pertains either to Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) or to Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah. According to Hafiz Ibn Hajar, it is more likely that Ibn ‘Uyaynah said, “I forgot the third matter.” What was that third matter which Ibn ‘Uyaynah forgot? There is an indication in the Muwatta of Imam Malik that the third matter could be: “Do not make my grave an idol after me.” Just as in the narration of the Muwatta, this expulsion is mentioned along with the Jews, or as in the narration of Anas (radi Allahu anhu), the third instruction could be to take care of prayer and slaves. (: Fath al-Bari, Book of Maghazi, Chapter: The Illness and Death of the Prophet ﷺ) In the meaning of expelling the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula, all idol-worshipping polytheists, Jews, Christians, and Magians are included, and it is obligatory to expel them from here.
