Ata bin Abi Rabah narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any person eats something, he should not wipe his hand (with a cloth or anything else) until he has licked it or has had someone else lick it." Sufyan says: Amr said to them, "O Abu Muhammad! This narration Ata has reported from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him)." So Amr replied, "By Allah! I heard this narration from Ata, which he narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and this was before Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us in Makkah." Sufyan says: The meeting of Amr bin Qais and Ata with Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) happened in the year when Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) took up residence (or performed i'tikaf) in Makkah.
