Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) lifted the curtain, and the people were standing in rows behind Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Now, from the glad tidings of Prophethood, only true dreams remain, which a Muslim sees (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words) or which are shown to him. Beware! I have been forbidden from reciting (Qur'an) during bowing (ruku') or prostration (sujud). As for bowing, in it you should glorify your Lord, and as for prostration, in it you should make supplication with earnestness, for it is more likely to be accepted."
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit:
From this hadith, it is understood that a good dream is a part of prophethood and a sign of a believer. It is prohibited to recite the Noble Qur’an during bowing (ruku‘) and prostration (sujud); in these positions, only the greatness of Allah Ta‘ala should be declared, and in prostration, the prescribed (masnun) supplication should be made, because Allah Ta‘ala accepts the supplication made in prostration to a great extent.

1046. Commentary:
➊ These statements are from the last days of the blessed life of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
➋ A Prophet can be given glad tidings through revelation (wahy), but for ordinary followers (ummah), glad tidings can only be given through dreams or, on rare occasions, through inspiration (ilham). Since the passing of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was near and the cessation of revelation was imminent, he spoke in this manner.
➌ In bowing (ruku‘), the declaration of Allah’s greatness and glorification (tasbih) are more appropriate, so greater attention should be given to them. In prostration (sujud), there is an opportunity for supplication (du‘a), because this is the utmost state of humility, submission, and lowliness for a human being. Among the pillars of prayer, this is the greatest objective; therefore, one should strive and exert oneself fully in supplication during prostration. “Every statement has its own appropriate place.” Although prostration is also a place for glorification (tasbih).

Ma‘bad bin Hilal ‘Anazi said: We went to Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) and made Thabit (al-Banani) our intermediary (to obtain permission to meet him). When we arrived at his place, he was performing the Duha prayer. Thabit sought permission for us (to enter). We entered and presented ourselves before him. He seated Thabit with him on his bed. Thabit said to him: “O Abu Hamzah! Your brothers from among the people of Basra request you to narrate to them the hadith about intercession.” Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told us: “When the Day of Resurrection comes, people will surge into each other like waves. They will come to Adam (peace be upon him) and say: ‘Intercede for your children (so that they may be saved from the hardships of the Gathering and the agonizing wait).’ He will say: ‘I am not for this. But you should go to Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him), for he is the Khalil (close friend) of Allah.’ The people will go to Ibrahim (peace be upon him). He will reply: ‘I am not for this. But you should go to Musa (Moses, peace be upon him), for he is the one to whom Allah spoke directly.’ So they will go to Musa (peace be upon him). He will say: ‘I am not for this. But you should go to ‘Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him), for he is the Spirit of Allah and His Word.’ So they will go to ‘Isa (peace be upon him), and he will say: ‘I am not for this. But you should go to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).’ So they will come to me, and I will say: ‘I am for this (task).’ I will proceed and seek permission to appear before my Lord, and I will be granted permission. I will stand before Him and praise Him with such words of praise as I am not capable of now; Allah will inspire me with those praises. Then I will fall in prostration before Him. Then it will be said to me: ‘O Muhammad! Raise your head and speak, you will be heard; ask, you will be given; intercede, your intercession will be accepted.’ I will say: ‘O my Lord! My Ummah! My Ummah!’ Then it will be said to me: ‘Go, and take out from the Fire whoever has faith in his heart equal to a grain of wheat or barley.’ I will go and do so. Then I will return to my Lord and praise Him with the same forms of praise, then fall in prostration before Him. Then it will be said to me: ‘O Muhammad! Raise your head and speak, you will be heard; ask, you will be given; intercede, your intercession will be accepted.’ I will say: ‘O my Lord! My Ummah! My Ummah!’ It will be said to me: ‘Go, and take out from the Fire whoever has faith in his heart equal to a mustard seed.’ So I will go and do so. Then I will return to my Lord and praise Him with similar praises, then fall in prostration before Him. Then it will be said to me: ‘O Muhammad! Raise your head, speak, you will be heard; ask, you will be given; intercede, your intercession will be accepted.’ I will say: ‘O my Lord! My Ummah! My Ummah!’ Then it will be said to me: ‘Go, and take out from the Fire whoever has less than a mustard seed, even less, even less faith in his heart.’ So I will go and do so.” This is the narration of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) which he related to us. (Ma‘bad bin Hilal ‘Anazi) said: So we left his place, and when we reached the upper part of the open plain, we said: (How good it would be) if we went to Hasan al-Basri and greeted him. He (out of fear of Hajjaj bin Yusuf) was hiding in the house of Abu Khalifah. When we reached him, we greeted him. We said: “O Abu Sa‘id! We are coming from your brother Abu Hamzah (the kunyah of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him). We have never heard a hadith like the one he narrated to us about intercession.” Hasan al-Basri said: “Bring it, narrate it.” We narrated the hadith to him, and he said: “Go on, narrate more.” We said: “He did not narrate more than this to us.” He (Hasan al-Basri) said: “He narrated this hadith to us twenty years ago, at that time he was in full strength. He has left out a part; I do not know whether the Shaykh forgot or he did not wish to narrate the whole hadith to you, lest you rely solely on what is mentioned in it.” We said: “Please narrate it to us.” So he laughed and said: «إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا» “Man was created hasty,” I only mentioned this to you for the reason that I wanted to narrate this hadith to you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Then I will return to my Lord a fourth time, and praise Him with the same praises, then fall in prostration before Him. Then it will be said to me: ‘O Muhammad! Raise your head, speak, you will be heard; ask, you will be given; intercede, your intercession will be accepted.’ I will say: ‘O my Lord! Grant me permission regarding those who said ‘La ilaha illallah’ (There is no god but Allah).’ Allah will say: ‘This is not for you, but by My Honor, My Majesty, My Greatness, and My Supremacy! I will take out from the Fire those who said ‘La ilaha illallah’.’” Ma‘bad said: I bear witness regarding Hasan al-Basri that he told us that he heard this narration from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). I think he said: twenty years ago, and at that time his faculties were complete.

876. Commentary:
➊ The standing of Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu on the prayer place (musalla) of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam became a source of reassurance and comfort for the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. And this has been considered as an indication of Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu’s greater entitlement (being the most deserving) to the caliphate.
➋ A good dream is a cause of glad tidings for a Muslim. Sometimes a person sees it himself, or it is shown to another Muslim.
➌ From this, some scholars have made the subtle inference that one Muslim can perform istikhara (prayer for guidance) for another Muslim. (Also, please see the benefits of the next hadith.)
➍ Recitation of the Qur’an is not permissible in bowing (ruku‘) and prostration (sujud).
➎ Supplication (du‘a) should be made abundantly in prostration (sujud); there is great hope for its acceptance.

Lexical Explanation: «فَقَمِنٌ» in this, «فا» is a jaza’iyyah (particle of consequence), in «قَمِنٌ» the qaf has a fatha and the meem has a kasrah beneath it, meaning: he is deserving of this, he is worthy of it.
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The prayer (salah) consists of various pillars (arkan), each of which has a distinct form. For each, specific supplications (adhkar) are prescribed and established from the Sunnah.
➋ The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has prohibited the recitation of the Qur’an during bowing (ruku‘) and prostration (sujud). Instead, he instructed that in ruku‘, one should declare the greatness of the Lord, i.e., «سُبْحان ربِّي الْعَظيم», and in sujud, one should supplicate (make du‘a).
➌ According to some hadith scholars and Imam Ahmad rahimahullah, declaring the greatness of the Lord in ruku‘ and supplicating in sujud is obligatory (wajib), whereas the majority of scholars have deemed it recommended (mustahabb).
➍ Prostration (sujud) is one of the most important positions for the acceptance of supplication (du‘a), which is why the Prophet encouraged supplication in it. He himself used to make various supplications in sujud. One such supplication will be mentioned in the following hadith.
