Shaibani narrates: I entered the mosque with Shu’mi, so he said: Is there any scholar you know of, with whom we can go and sit? Do you want to go to Abu Husayn? I replied: No. Then he looked around and his gaze fell upon Yazid bin Asam, so he said: Do you want to go and sit with him? Because Lady Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) is his maternal aunt. So we went and sat with him, and Yazid bin Asam said: In the presence of Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the lizard was mentioned, that “I do not eat it, nor do I declare it unlawful.” So Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) became angry and said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was only sent to declare lawful things as lawful and unlawful things as unlawful, and this (lizard) was eaten in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). (This means that it is lawful.)
