491 - حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ قَالَ: ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَي، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «لَإِنْ بَقِيتُ لَآمُرَنَّ بِصِيَامِ يَوْمٍ قَبْلَهُ أَوْ يَوْمٍ بَعْدَهُ» يَعْنِي يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ
Dawud bin Ali narrates from his father, who narrates from his grandfather, that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "If I remain alive, I will surely order to fast one day before it or one day after it." The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) meant the day of Ashura.

From this it is understood that along with the fast of Ashura (the tenth of Muharram), one should also combine the fast of the ninth or the eleventh of Muharram. However, this narration is weak.
