Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I went with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to the house of my maternal aunt Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), and with us was Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) as well. Lady Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) submitted to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! Should we not present to you that food which Umm ‘Afiq gave us as a gift? She brought some roasted lizard. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it, he spat three times, but he did not eat it. He instructed us to eat it. Then a vessel was presented to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in which there was milk, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank from it. I was on the right side of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting on the left side, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: “Boy, the right to drink is yours, but if you wish, you may give preference to Khalid.” I said: I will not give preference to anyone regarding what remains from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When Allah grants someone something to eat, he should say: ‘O Allah, bless it for us and grant us better than it in exchange.’ And when Allah grants someone milk to drink, he should say: ‘O Allah, bless it for us and increase it for us.’” (The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:) To my knowledge, there is nothing besides this (milk) that suffices for both food and drink (i.e., for hunger and thirst).
